An Explorer's Guide To Tuscany: The Picturesque Pisa

Anyone who plans to tour Italy should include a stop in Pisa on their itinerary. Situated within the enchanting Tuscany region, Pisa is famous for its landmarks that are quintessentially Italian. Pisa has been in existence since the days of Ancient Rome and continues to intrigue the minds of visitors who come from near and far to experience all the splendors of the city. The Leaning Tower of Pisa

No visit to Pisa would be complete without stopping by this world-famous landmark. Despite its flawed construction that causes it to lean, the tower is still safe enough for visitors who want to climb the winding 297-step stairway inside to reach the rooftop observation deck. Crowds are also known to gather around the outside of the tower to take humorous pictures.

Santa Maria della Spina

Built in the 13th century, this church is noted for its historical and religious significance despite its small stature. To avoid flooding from the nearby river, the church’s structure was dismantled and reassembled on a higher level in the 19th century. The outside of the church is adorned with beautiful statues and other intricate carvings that accentuate its façade. Visitors can also tour the inside of the church to see other historical and religious relics.

Palazzo della Carovana

Visitors strolling through Knights’ Square can stop by this magnificent palace to take a tour. The Order of the Knights of St. Stephen was once headquartered here, and today the palace is famous for its awe-inspiring sculptures that flank its exterior. Several 16th-century paintings and 19th-century stuccoes are on display inside the palace.

Gioco del Ponte

In addition to its iconic places of interest, Pisa is known for this exciting annual festival that includes music, costumes and reenactments of tournaments from medieval times. One of the highlights of the event is a game involving opposing teams pushing a huge cart across the middle of a bridge. A lively parade is also part of the festival.
