A threat to explode a device at Times Square, while not believed to be credible, has put police on alert and brought more officers there.

Times Square, NY — A threat over social media to attack Times Square has brought extra police and security to the area. The New York Police Department says that they are taking the steps despite thinking that the threat "isn't believed to be credible.

"Out of an abundance of caution you will see an increased NYPD presence at locations throughout NYC including Times Square," they said.

The threat was made over Reddit.

A person said that they would bring pounds of explosives to the area, officials tell Patch.

The NYPD say that they are investigating the post, which appears to have been taken down.

Governor Cuomo called the threat "a despicable and cowardly act meant to instill fear and panic in our community, and New Yorkers will not tolerate these scare tactics.

"I am directing the New York State Police to coordinate with local and federal partners to launch a full-scale investigation into this incident."
