Wait List Opens For Hell's Kitchen Mitchell-Lama Building

Subsidized studio and one-bedroom units are available to Hell's Kitchen and Chelsea residents.

HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — A wait list for a Hell's Kitchen building in the Mitchell-Lama affordable housing program is currently accepting applicants from residents of the Hell's Kitchen and Chelsea neighborhoods.

The Manhattan Plaza complex — two high-rise buildings on by West 43rd street between Ninth and Tenth avenues — will accept applications to its waiting list until Jan. 31, according to the city Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

Subsidized studios and one-bedroom units are available at the development, according to the Mitchell-Lama Connect website. Income requirements for Mitchell-Lama housing differ based on whether the units are federally assisted rentals, federally assisted co-ops or non-federally assisted.

The units at Manhattan Plaza are rentals, so individuals must earn no more than $58,450 to qualify and families of three must earn no more than $75,150. The income requirements for people older than 62 are reduced. Mitchell-Lama studios can house up to two people and one-bedrooms can house up to three people.

Information provided by the city Department of Housing Preservation and Development did not disclose the asking rents for the Manhattan Plaza units.

Applicants must apply through the city's Mitchell-Lama Connect website for one of four waiting lists: The studio list, the studio elderly list (must be 62 years or older), the one-bedroom list and the one-bedroom elderly list.

The Manhattan Plaza waiting list is only accepting applications from residents of Manhattan Community Board 4, which spans parts of the Hell's Kitchen and Chelsea neighborhoods.

The official boundaries of the community board are:

  • Southern Border: North Side of West 14th Street;
  • Eastern Border: Sixth Avenue until West 26th Street where the border travels west and goes up Eighth Avenue;
  • Northern Border: West 56th Street between Eighth and Tenth avenues; West 54th Street between Tenth & 11th avenues, West 55th Street between 11th Avenue and the Hudson River; West Side Highway north to West 59th Street.
