MVPL to Host Book Reading & Discussion with Author Richie Narvaez
Author of Hipsters' Death Rattle Discusses Gentrification and You
Mount Vernon, NY- The Mount Vernon Public Library is hosting Gentrification and You: Hipster Death Rattle Book Reading and Discussion on Thursday, November 14, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Library Rotunda.
Richie Narvaez (aka R. Narvaez) is an award-winning poet, essayist, editor, and instructor. Born and raised in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Narvaez currently resides in Pelham Bay in the Bronx. His literary and crime fiction have been published in Mississippi Review, Murdaland, Pilgrimage, Indian Country Noir, Long Island Noir, and Tiny Crimes.
His first collection of short stories, Roachkiller and Other Stories, received the 2013 Spinetingler Award for Best Anthology/Short Story Collection and was listed as one of BookRiot's 100 Must-Read Works of Noir. Narvaez has been the Bronx Council on the Art's Artist in Residence at the Morris Park Library since October 2018, where he is running a creative writing workshop one day a week, and is mentoring a number of retirees in creative writing. Narvaez was also a judge for the prestigious 2019 PEN Open Book Awards

The author draws on his own experiences growing up in Wiliamsburg during the height of its transformation from what was primarily an ethnic community into a trendy neighborhood. In the new thriller a reporter tries to solve a mystery against a backdrop of rapid gentrification, skyrocketing rents, and class tension. Narvaez will discuss the writing of the book, how it deals with these issues, and how it might be affecting you now or in the future.
