MOUNT VERNON, NY — Almost three months after the Westchester Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing discovered its first Covid-19 case, the facility is now Covid-19-free.

The 240-bed facility at 10 Claremont Ave. was able to document its Covid-19-free status on June 2 as the result of comprehensive testing. Every resident has now been tested at least once and all staff are tested twice a week as mandated by New York State. The first symptoms of Covid-19 were exhibited by a resident at the facility on March 9.

“The availability of Covid-19 testing was extremely limited when the virus first reached our facility in mid-March. At that time, only those showing outward signs of illness were tested due to the scarcity of test kits and laboratory capacity,” WCRN administrator Ari Zadeh said in a letter to residents announcing the news. “After a diligent search, we were able to partner with a lab that was able to provide us comprehensive testing. Those tests allowed us to pinpoint both asymptomatic residents and staff who required quarantine.”

“We are deeply grateful to our team of health care providers who helped 47 residents and 43 of our staff fully recover from Covid-19,” said Zadeh.

Moving forward, the staff at the WCRN will remain vigilant. Any resident displaying the slightest symptom of Covid-19 will be tested. Any resident returning from the hospital for any reason will be tested upon admission as an added precaution. The facility will continue to follow all state and federal regulations.
