Bill To Change Ramapo Central's Name Heads To Cuomo's Office

Governor to decide whether to approve a bill authorizing Ramapo Central's proposed name change to Suffern Central.

RAMAPO, NY - A bill that could allow the Ramapo Central School District to change its name is headed for Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office after being passed by the state legislature, the district announced in a Facebook post.

The bill, if signed, would direct the state education commissioner to change the district's name to the Suffern Central School District.

Ramapo Central has sought the name change in a bid to differentiate itself from the neighboring, and troubled, East Ramapo Central School District, Patch previously reported.

The district's school board approved the name change in February.

"We would like to thank Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee, Assemblyman Karl Brabenec and Senator David Carlucci for their support of this legislation and would like to extend the appreciation of our entire District to all who responded to surveys on this topic and who made your opinions and support heard by our Board of Education and District Administration as well as by our State legislators," the district stated in its Facebook post.

The district added that it is already planning a rollout campaign of the new name, and that it will have another update later this summer.
