Cornell to Speak on County’s Fight v Treatment Plant At Watershed Conference
She will also focus on methods to boost conservation, reduce leaks As Rockland seeks to become model for NY
Rockland County Legislator Harriet Cornell will participate in this year’s Hudson River Watershed Alliance Conference, whose theme is Healthy Watersheds, Healthy Waters: Emerging Perspectives on Sustainable Watershed Management.
“I am honored to be a participant in this important event that brings together scientists, environmentalists and other experts who share their knowledge, build partnerships, and work collaboratively to identify both issues and solutions with the goal of protecting the health of our beautiful Hudson River, its tributaries and streams,” Cornell said in a press release about the event.
The Nov. 2 conference is being conducted in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Program at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Presidential Library & Home in Hyde Park.

It will focus on emerging research findings, case studies, and perspectives on protecting drinking water sources, engaging people to care for water, preparing for the effects of climate change, and addressing environmental and economic justice issues related to water resources. It will also highlight key challenges, policies and opportunities for managing water resources in our communities and regional watersheds.
Cornell, who chairs the Rockland County Task Force on Water Resources Management, will present this year’s Case Study, “Water as Resource: The Challenge of Conservation.” She will focus on how a coalition of residents, elected officials and environmental organizations successfully fought a proposal to build a costly, energy-intensive water treatment plant on the banks of the Hudson River and the new effort to boost conservation and reduce leaks to ensure a sustainable water future for Rockland and to serve as a model for the state.
