Crash Closed New Hempstead Road All Day: Update

About 1,000 customers lost power early Thursday morning. The road was closed from before dawn to after dusk.

UPDATE at 6:30 pm: New Hempstead Road is reopened, Ramapo police said.


RAMAPO, NY — An early morning crash on New Hempstead Road left much of the community without power. New Hempstead Road west of Route 45 was still closed as of 10:15 a.m., and could be closed until around noon, Ramapo police said.

A vehicle travelling westbound on New Hempstead Road lost control and struck a utility pole causing a power outage in the area. No injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

The East Ramapo Central School District had to call a 2-hour delay for Hempstead, Summit Park and Grandview Elementary Schools.

The crash also meant traffic lights stopped working. Ramapo officers manned intersections for rush hour.

Orange and Rockland Utilities restored power to most customers within a couple of hours, reporting just 24 customers out by 10:30 a.m.
