Macy's Will Close The Nanuet Store In 2019

The retailer will follow Sears by a couple of months after a big clearance sale.

NANUET, NY — The Shops at Nanuet will lose one of its anchors in early 2019 — Macy's — shortly after its other longtime anchor (Sears) closes. The retailer will keep the West Nyack location open.

The Nanuet store will start a 2-3 month clearance sale in January.

"Macy’s, Inc. has been reviewing its real estate portfolio across the country to see if there are opportunities to improve the use of our assets," said Emily Hawkins, the director of Northeast Media Relations.

"Macy’s previously shared this information with our valued colleagues. Regular, non-seasonal employees who we are unable to place at Macy’s will be eligible for severance, including outplacement resources.

"The decision to close stores is always a difficult one, but Macy’s is delighted to have served the Nanuet community over the past 50 years, and we look forward to continuing to do so at the nearby Macy’s store in West Nyack and online at macys.com.”

Macy's has been in Nanuet for decades, anchoring first the Nanuet Mall and then the Shops at Nanuet along with Sears when the redesign was finished in 2013-14. Sears is closing in December.

Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann said he was pleased to welcome At Home to the Shops at Nanuet. Metropolitan Realty Associates (MRA) approached the town in 2017 about the potential sale of the site and sought input as they developed plans, he said.

“We are delighted that MRA has a vision for this property that will allow for it to continue to be a vibrant retail space, serving as an engine of economic activity and job creation for the Town of Clarkstown,” Hoehmann said in an announcement, adding “The Town is also grateful that Mr. Farkas and MRA did its due diligence by meeting with me and our professional staff and inquiring ahead of time about how its needs would fit into the Town’s existing zoning and building codes.”

In addition to At Home, MRA plans to have another tenant on the second floor, and a possible restaurant or food establishment.

“I want to thank Supervisor George Hoehmann and his team for working collaboratively with us to make sure that proposed parameters of the property were a good fit for the people of the Town and the future tenant. We look forward to having a close working relationship with the Town in the future as the new space comes to life,” Joseph A. Farkas, CEO of Metropolitan Realty Associates said.
