RCC Celebrates New Spaces on Campus
The public is invited to see the progress of the Peace Garden, the Holocaust Museum, and the Outdoor Performance space.
From RCC: The public is invited to see the progress of three projects that are helping to reshape the Rockland Community College campus. Visitors will get a chance to experience RCC’s new Herbert Kurz Peace Garden as part of the free event on June 29.

Visitors will gather in the Atrium of the Cultural Arts Center to enjoy musical entertainment and refreshments. RCC President Cliff L. Wood will then lead the group to visit the three sites

“This garden represents my father’s concerns about the world, the community and Rockland Community College,” said Leonard Kurz, director of the Kurz Family Foundation. “It can be a peaceful place for the RCC community to reflect, and ease the stress of their lives.”
Leonard Kurz also hopes the garden can have a broader impact. “This can radiate out from the campus and be an inspiration for people to incorporate a concern for peace, cooperation and coexistence into their lives,” he said
The Herbert Kurz Peace Garden was designed by Elisabeth Voigt in collaboration with architect Jeffrey Hall. It includes a number of native species and other pollinator-friendly plants. Those who wish to be a part of this innovative space can make a donation to dedicate one of the garden’s benches or flowering dogwood trees; an inscribed plaque will mark the location. Holocaust Museum

The June 29 event will also feature a stop at the entrance to the Holocaust Museum & Center for Tolerance and Education, located in RCC’s Library & Media Center building. Organization leaders will discuss the ongoing construction of the museum’s new dynamic and interactive multi-media exhibit. Musician Tamara Freeman, an expert on the music of the Holocaust era, will perform on a 1935 Joseph Bausch viola that was rescued from the Holocaust.

Outdoor performance space
The third site on the tour is the future location of the John & Joan Maloney Rockland Globe Theater. A campaign last year raised funds to dismantle a dilapidated amphitheater in the courtyard behind RCC’s Cultural Arts Center. This new outdoor performance space will occupy that area, and provide a location for the annual Rockland Shakespeare Company performances as well as student productions.
Saxophonist Herve Alexander will also perform at the event, and RCC students Tyler Miranda and Tania Mazariego will sing, accompanied by pianist Adam Gloc. This will be the final event as RCC President for Dr. Wood, who officially retires the next day after more than 13 years in office.
