Rockland Woman Dies In New Year's Crash On I-87

Police said she drove into a tractor-trailer stopped in the right lane as a good Samaritan tried to help a disabled car.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — One person died New Year's Day in a car crash on the New York State Thruway in Chestnut Ridge.

The crash occurred at 2:30 a.m., New York State Police said.

According to their preliminary investigation, a trucker had stopped to help a disabled car in the right lane on the southbound side of I-87. He parked his 2018 Freightliner behind it and set up orange hazard triangles. A tow truck was called.

While the tow truck was loading the disabled car, a Mercedes Benz traveling south crashed into the rear of the tractor-trailer, police said.

The driver of the Mercedes Benz, Mardochena Louis, 26, of Spring Valley, NY, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Rockland County Medical Examiner, police said.

The Mercedes Benz carried one passenger, Quinten T. Jackson, 35, of Spring Valley, police said. He was transported to Westchester Medical Center with multiple injuries and is currently in serious but stable condition.

The tractor-trailer driver, Dante M. Damanti, 41, of Lebanon, PA, was not injured, police said. The tow truck and disabled vehicle were not involved in the collision and no additional injuries were reported.
