SPRING VALLEY, NY — A highway has been named for the Rockland County library security guard who police said was killed by a patron earlier this year.

Senator David Carlucci passed a law to allow a portion of State Route 45 in the village of Spring Valley to be renamed after a woman who was stabbed and killed while on the job.

The Sandra L. Wilson Memorial Highway, which runs from Gerow Avenue to East Hickory Street on Route 45 was unveiled Friday with new signage.

Wilson’s family was in attendance.

“Sandra was a kind soul to all who knew her," said Ka’Liyah Nash, Wilson’s daughter. "We will miss her love for family the most. We are grateful to Senator Carlucci for pushing to remember her life through this memorial highway.”

Carlucci said renaming the road ensured Wilson’s kindness and service to community lives on.

"It’s a small gesture, which in no way can heal the pain this family feels," he said, "but this roadway allowed for a memorial that is well deserved and for all in our community to remember and celebrate Sandra Wilson’s life.”

At the dedication ceremony, family said the mother of three was always smiling and took her job as a security guard at the Finkelstein Memorial Library very seriously. Wilson worked there for nine years, starting as a clerk and becoming a full-time Security Aide in 2019. Library staff and frequent visitors remember Wilson as friendly and well-liked by many.

Wilson, 52, of Spring Valley, was stabbed to death Feb. 18 while working at the Finkelstein Memorial Library in Spring Valley.

She was attacked, police said, at the computer terminals on the third floor of the library by Blanchard Glaudin, a 25-year-old homeless man.

The police's preliminary investigation found Glaudin stabbed Wilson after she told him to turn his music down.
