NEW YORK — Two words can dishearten any New York City apartment-hunter with an animal companion: "No pets." But pet lovers are more likely than not to find accommodations for their furry friends in a half-dozen Manhattan neighborhoods, a new report shows.

The real-estate listing website Zumper created a list of Manhattan neighborhoods with the highest proportions of apartments that are pet-friendly, meaning they allow cats or dogs. More than half the listings are welcoming of animals in six areas, the Thursday report shows.

Roosevelt Island is the borough's pet-friendliest spot — 82 percent of the listings on the strip of land in the East River are OK with critters, according to Zumper. It was followed by Central Park at about 69 percent, the report says, perhaps because there's plenty of space there for pets to roam.

The other four havens for pet lovers were all downtown. Nearly 68 percent of the apartments in NoHo are pet friendly, followed by Battery Park City with about 58 percent, Chelsea with almost 54 percent and the West Village with about 53 percent, Zumper says.

Some 36 percent of Manhattan's listings overall are pet-friendly, the report says. But apartment-hunters with pets may want to avoid Chinatown, with had the smallest share of welcoming listings at 3.77 percent, Zumper found.
