NY Eviction Moratorium Extended To Jan. 1 For Residential Tenants

NEW YORK — Renters in New York worried about getting kicked out of their homes amid the coronavirus pandemic can breathe easier into 2021.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced that the state’s coronavirus-related eviction ban will last at least until Jan. 1, 2021.

“I want people to have fundamental stability in their lives,” he said.

Housing stability, especially in New York City, has been a major concern for residential tenants who lost jobs and wages as COVID-19 struck. Many have called to “cancel rent” and pushed for sweeping reforms.

Cuomo’s moratorium, which overlaps with other eviction bans, falls short of that. It falls under the Tenant Safe Harbor Act, which applies to residential renters who have experienced financial hardship from COVID-19.

Other renters who faced evictions from before the pandemic fall under a different moratorium that expires Oct. 1.
