See What New Yorkers Want In Their Ideal Apartments

Brooklyn loves outdoor space and fireplaces are a must in the West Village, according to StreetEasy.

NEW YORK — Every New York City apartment has its imperfections, but apartment-hunters still have their dealbreakers: It can't be too far from the subway. It has to have a dishwasher. Pets must be welcome.

It turns out those preferences vary by location, according to a StreetEasy analysis published Thursday. The real-estate website examined a year's worth of apartment searches to determine the most "uniquely popular" amenity in each neighborhood.

Some of the results back up stereotypes. For example, residents or prosepective residents of the ritzy areas around Central Park looked for pied-à-terres — maybe to rest their weary heads between globe-trotting trips.

And people seeking homes in gentrifying Bushwick and Crown Heights wanted to make sure guarantors were accepted, possibly so their parents could help them snag an apartment.

Many neighborhoods in north and central Brooklyn, such as Fort Greene, DUMBO and Park Slope, showed a preference for outdoor space. Parking was a must in some parts of Queens such as Astoria and Long Island City, while laundry proved a necessity in Upper Manhattan. And West Village searchers just had to have a fireplace.
