Students Pay Through The Nose For Housing Near These NYC Colleges
Students at two Manhattan universities face the nation's highest off-campus housing prices, according to a recent report.

NEW YORK — Students at these schools might need a loan just to pay their rent. Two New York City universities boast the nation's highest prices for nearby off-campus housing, according to a recent RentCafe report.
The real estate website analyzed the average rents for apartments within one or two miles of the nation's top 100 universities using U.S. News and World Report's college rankings and rent data from the Yardi Matrix, RentCafe's sister company.
Students at New York University and Columbia University face the nation's most expensive markets for nearby off-campus housing, the May 23 report shows. Average rents for apartments within a mile of the schools go for $4,463 and $4,217 respectively, RentCafe says.

Both rates are above Manhattan's already staggering average rent of $4,132, the report shows. But students can get a break if they look for housing a little further away. The average rent near NYU drops to $4,090 within two miles of the school, while Columbia's falls to $3,654, according to RentCafe.
While Columbia's Ivy League campus comes with a price, students could save even more by going to school just a little further uptown at Yeshiva University, which has its main campus in Washington Heights.

The average rent within a mile of Yeshiva is $2,225 — more than $1,900 below the average price across Manhattan, RentCafe says. That makes Yeshiva the nation's most affordable college compared to the average rent of its home city, according to the report.
