4 Travel Tips For Labor Day Weekend Hudson Valley

best and worst travel times, gas prices, construction moratorium, police crackdown

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — It's time for the last summer getaway. And Labor Day weekend 2018 is setting a record for airline travel, with 16.5 million people expected to fly somewhere or other, and a lot of others on the road.

So before you head out, here are four things to know:

  1. If you can choose your travel time, avoid Friday and Tuesday. They'll be the worst, according to an analysis by RewardExpert. Saturday and Sunday will be least busy.
  2. Again, New York officials will halt lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways to accommodate travelers during the busy Labor Day weekend. It will run from Friday till Tuesday. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.
  3. State and local police have already started their end-of-summer-holiday crackdown on drunk and distracted drivers. Don't drink and drive in a last hurrah. If you do, you're bound to be caught up in New York's part of the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.
  4. Filling the tank will put a hole in your pocket. According to AAA, the year-to-date-national gas price average is 41 cents more than in 2017. The price of gas Thursday is more than $3 per gallon in Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties, and just under $3 in Orange and Ulster. AAA forecasts that the average will drop this fall, however, so there's that.
