Police checkpoints; construction; congestion; train, bus schedule changes

July 4, 2018 may fall in the middle of the week, but that won't prevent a whole lot of people from getting on the road. Here are five things to know about travel this Independence Day.

  1. AAA says a record-breaking 46.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home. That's the highest number since AAA started tracking 18 years ago.
  2. The worst time for travel in the NYC metro area will be between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to AAA.
  3. Lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will be suspended Tuesday to Thursday to accommodate travelers during the busy Independence Day holiday. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs. Check 511NY for details.
  4. New York State Police have increased patrols to crack down on drunk and drugged driving and other traffic infractions over the Fourth of July holiday. Troopers are conducting sobriety checkpoints and target reckless and aggressive driving statewide. This special enforcement detail will run through Thursday.
  5. Metro-North has early trains scheduled Tuesday and a holiday schedule Wednesday.
  6. Rockland buses will meet the early trains in Tarrytown Tuesday. On Independence Day, the schedule will be no TZx buses; Sunday service on TOR #59, 91, 92, 93 and Loop 3; no service on 94, 95 and 97; regular service on Loops 1 and 2. On Wednesday, Westchester Bee-Line buses and Paratransit will operate on a Sunday schedule.
