Community Mourns Clarkstown Teen Killed In Crash

Services are scheduled and a GoFundMe account has been set up.

NEW CITY, NY — The community is mourning Vladyslav Hvalyk, the Clarkstown High School North junior who died after a crash in New City on Thursday night.

"Vlad was extremely loved and no words can explain the hurt we are all feeling," said the organizers of a GoFundMe page set up to help his family defray the costs of the medical bills and funeral.

Hvalyk, 16, died of his injuries the day after the three-car crash.

Visitation will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Service Inc., 321 S Main St., in New City. A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Church, 39 Collins Ave. in Spring Valley.

The driver of the car in which Hvalyk was a passenger, Alan Mendoza, 18, faces felony charges including vehicular homicide, manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.

The three-car crash in the Prides Crossing area closed Congers Road for hours overnight. Five of the six people involved were injured, police said.

It was the second fatal crash involving teenagers in Rockland County in the past two weeks. A Suffern High School sophomore was killed in a crash on Route 202 in Montebello April 24 and another teen was charged with vehicular manslaughter.
