Rockland will now have additional resources to prevent and treat diabetes. The Refuah Health Center in Spring Valley recently received a $50,000 grant from the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust and National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) to aid its diabetes hypertension care management and coordination services.
“Chronic disease is the leading cause of death and disability in the United States and it’s an important health care issue that is affecting communities nationwide,” said Joanne Dwyer, Director CVS Caremark Charitable Trust.
Refuah Health Center among two other Innovations in Community Health grant recipients, including awards to the William F. Ryan Community Healthy Center and AHRC, both of New York City, who will also uses the funds for diabetes, heart disease and hypertension care.

“When the Refuah Health Center opened its doors in the summer of 1989, local residents in Rockland, Sullivan, Orange and Ulster Counties had little or no health and medical resources nearby,” said Dwyer. “Through our partnership with NACHC, we are excited to help support Refuah Health Center as it strives to provide high-quality medical and supportive services that prevent and manage chronic diseases to all Center patients, regardless of their ability to pay.”
The Refuah Health Center serves residents Rockland, Sullivan, Orange, and Ulster counties whether they are able to pay or not, as their stand by the belief that everyone is entitled to “convenient, culturally appropriate and affordable.”

“The Innovations in Community Health initiative provides grants to support health centers that are using innovative approaches for the treatment and management of chronic illnesses, specifically heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and asthma,” said Dwyer.
These funds are apart of a $1 million sum of funds to 21 communities health care centers across the community to combat chronic illness.
