Flash Flood Watch Joins Heat Advisories In The Hudson Valley

Plus there's an air quality alert for Orange and Putnam counties. Here are the details.

The Hudson Valley is going to have several kinds of severe weather on Wednesday.

  • A flash flood watch has been issued for Rockland and Westchester counties from noon to 8 p.m..
  • An air quality alert for elevated pollution levels has been issued for Orange and Putnam counties.
  • A heat advisory has been issued for eastern Ulster and western Dutchess counties from 1-7 p.m.
  • A heat advisory continues for Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester until 8 p.m.

The flash flood watch extends from noon through the evening and also includes northeast New Jersey. Thunderstorms developing near a stalled frontal boundary this afternoon will be capable of producing torrential rains, with rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour possible, the National Weather Service predicts.

That kind of rainfall within a short period of time could cause flash flooding of low lying, urban and poor drainage areas.

Meanwhile, it's going to continue to be very humid even after temperatures drop slightly.

Remember, when it's this hot and humid, drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside, and when possible, schedule strenuous activities in the early morning or evening. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
