Hudson Valley Forecast: Mother's Day Weekend

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Eager to get outside? We have some qualified good news: It looks as if we'll get a couple of breaks in the clouds as we head to the weekend.

Still, plan any Mother's Day outings carefully, because cooler air flowing into the region may be accompanied by unsettled weather.

"It might be a better idea to take mom out for breakfast on Sunday ... Or, if plans are even more flexible, Saturday might be a better day to celebrate from Ohio to Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York state," said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist. "The sporadic showers and spotty thunderstorms can occur any time through Mother's Day, but two storm systems bear watching for the potential for steadier rainfall."

Here's the five-day forecast from the National Weather Service based on northern Westchester:

• Wednesday - Showers late this morning, then showers with a slight chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. Patchy fog late this morning. Locally heavy rainfall possible this afternoon. Highs in the mid 60s. East winds around 5 mph, becoming northwest around 5 mph this afternoon. Chance of rain near 100 percent.
• Wednesday night - Mostly cloudy with showers likely in the evening, then mostly clear after midnight. Lows in the upper 40s. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent.
• Thursday - Sunny. Highs in the mid 60s. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
• Thursday Night - Mostly cloudy. Lows in the mid 40s. North winds 5 to 10 mph. Gusts up to 20 mph in the evening.
• Friday - Mostly sunny in the morning, then becoming mostly cloudy. Highs in the lower 60s. East winds 5 to 10 mph.
• Friday Night - Mostly cloudy. A chance of showers after midnight. Lows in the mid 40s. Chance of rain 30 percent.
• Saturday - Mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers. Highs in the mid 50s.
• Saturday Night - Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers in the evening, then mostly clear after midnight. Lows in the lower 40s. Chance of rain 30 percent.
• Sunday - Mostly sunny. Highs in the lower 60s.
• Sunday Night - Mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers. Lows in the mid 40s.
