New Kosher Grocery In Rockland Files Mandated Pandemic Plan

The store, which opened last week, was shut down temporarily by local officials.

SPRING VALLEY, NY — Bingo, the long-awaited kosher supermarket that opened in Spring Valley last week, was shut down temporarily Monday by local authorities for violating pandemic protocols, including overcrowding, social distancing and wearing masks, The Journal News reported.

Eight hours later, it reopened. Spring Valley officials said the managers had agreed to follow the state's rules on limiting the number of customers in the store at a time, educating employees on mask use and social distancing, and asking customers to wear masks, TJN reported. The store had also provided a written plan.

All businesses in New York were required to file pandemic protocol plans under the state's guidelines for reopening.

Bingo Wholesale, which has been called the "kosher Costco," just opened at the Spring Valley Marketplace. This is Bingo's third location. The company opened its first store in 2016 in Brooklyn. It's part of a fast-growing retail and wholesale segment that caters to a market for specialty and kosher food, said Burt Flickinger III, a New York-based supermarket analyst whose firm, Strategic Resource Group, has surveyed kosher stores, supermarkets and specialty shops in Brooklyn. While they may cater to a Jewish population, price, quality and selection attracts the overall community, he told Patch in 2019.
