Nyack High School Graduation Postponed Over Student's Death

The graduation, originally set for Thursday, will now be held on Friday.

UPDATE: Police are investigating the sudden death of Kailana Koether, who died the day of her graduation ceremony from Nyack High School.


NYACK, NY - Nyack High School's 2017 graduation has been postponed by one day in response to the death of senior Kailana Koether, the Nyack school district announced. Instead, a candlelight vigil will be held in Koether's memory.

The vigil is scheduled for Thursday night at 8 p.m., at MacCalman Field.

The ceremony, previously set for Thursday, will now take place on Friday night at 8 p.m, and will be also at MacCalman Field, the district added.

"The entire community is invited to join our staff and students at a vigil this evening as we come together in our shared grief," the district stated in its announcement.

Nyack Schools Superintendent James Montesano announced Koether's death in a community letter on Thursday morning. Koether was supposed to have been part of the graduating class, according to the district.
