2 Rockland EMTs Killed In Overnight Thruway Crash
A Chevy Tahoe collided with a tractor-trailer on I-87 near the Airmont Road exit. Both the driver and the passenger died.
SUFFERN, NY — Two Rockland County residents and members of the William Paul Feist Ambulance Corps and the Haverstraw Ambulance Corps died in a crash on the New York State Thruway in the middle of the night Monday.
New York State Police were dispatched to the crash on Interstate 87 southbound in Suffern, at 1:34 a.m. Moshe Herzog, 18, of Spring Valley, and David Z. Schneebalg, 26, of Monsey, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Herzog was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe southbound near mile-marker 29.1 in the center lane and Schneebalg was the sole passenger. Police said Herzog was attempting to change lanes and possibly exit the thruway on Exit 14B at Airmont Road.

Herzog's Tahoe collided with a 2007 Peterbilt tractor-trailer operated by Luis A. Velazquez, 59, of Elizabeth, N.J. Velazquez was traveling in the right lane, police said.
The crash sent both vehicles off the road over the right shoulder and they came to rest in a ditch along the wood line, police said. The Tahoe caught fire.

Velazquez was trapped in the cab of his truck and required extrication. He was transported to Westchester Medical Center for unknown injuries.
