After the shooting, Spring Valley High School's football game against Clarkstown South was canceled.
Both superintendents wrote messages to their communities.
Here's the message to parents from the interim superintendent of the East Ramapo school district:
Dear East Ramapo Families:
Due to a tragic incident yesterday near the Spring Valley High School Campus, based on an initial conversation and subsequent agreement between Clarkstown Superintendent, Dr. Cox and I, we agreed to and the East Ramapo Leadership Team subsequently sought to reschedule today’s Varsity football competition vs Clarkstown South.
After a series of exchanges with the Clarkstown AD Team with ERCSD Director of Health, PE and Athletics, Mr. Toombs, we have been notified that they have deemed that the contest will be postponed indefinitely.
Our goal is to seek to reschedule at the earliest time available. We are both disappointed and saddened by the events leading up to this issue and ERCSD is committed to rescheduling as soon as possible.
Please know that we remain committed to providing equitable access high quality services, resources and programs for all East Ramapo students and are working on an alternate football contest for our student-athletes, Marching Band and overall community.
Sincerely - Dr. Giamartino
Interim Superintendent of Schools.
Here's the message to the Clarkstown community:
Supt. Letter on Rescheduling of SHS v Spring Valley Football Game
I am writing to provide information regarding the cancellation of this weekend’s South Football Game against Spring Valley High School.
As you may know, given the recent criminal activity in Spring Valley, Superintendent of the East Ramapo Central School District, Dr. Raymond J. Giamartino, Jr., cancelled their home game against South scheduled for today, Saturday, March 27th. Subsequently, the request was made for South to host the game.
This morning I spoke with Superintendent Giamartino, following a consultation with the Clarkstown Police Department.
Given the seriousness of the incidents on Friday, the active police investigation and input from the Clarkstown and Spring Valley Police Departments, Superintendent Giamartino and I made the collective decision to postpone the game to a later date.
We understand this is disappointing for the players on both teams, and we look forward to rescheduling the game when it is safe to do so.
Sincerely,
Martin D. Cox, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
