Rockland, NY, Clarkstown Officials Hosting Gun Buyback Wednesday

For working handguns and assault rifles, participants will receive an iPad along with payment.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — New York State Attorney General Letitia James in collaboration with the Clarkstown Police Department and the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office will be hosting a Community Gun Buyback from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday.

The buyback will be held at East Spring Valley Fire District, 62 Overlook Blvd, Nanuet, NY 10954.

  • Assault Rifle: $250
  • Handgun: $150
  • Rifle or Shotgun: $75
  • Non-working or Antique Gun: $25

The Office of the Attorney General accepts — with no questions asked — working and non-working, unloaded firearms in exchange for compensation. Since 2019 the AG's office has taken more than 1,100 firearms out of communities through gun buybacks.

“Gun violence is an ongoing threat to our neighborhoods and it endangers New Yorkers every day," James said after a similar event in Poughkeepsie June 26. "From taking guns off the streets, to going after those who illegally own guns and cause harm, I am taking every step possible to protect our communities from gun violence and prevent potential tragedies. My office will continue to do everything we can to preserve public safety, and I thank our partners in law enforcement for their crucial support in this effort."

Payment will be made by pre-paid gift card at the site. Receive an iPad along with the gift card for working handguns and assault rifles. One iPad per person, subject to availability on a first-come first-served basis.

  • A. Guns must be UNLOADED and placed in a plastic bag, a paper bag, or a box.

  • A. Yes, it must be UNLOADED and in the trunk in a plastic bag, a paper bag, or a box.
  • Q. How many firearms can I surrender?
  • A. As many as you wish to provide.
  • Q. Can any member of the public surrender a gun?
  • A. Licensed gun dealers, and active or retired law enforcement officers are not eligible for this program.
  • Q. Do I need any identification to turn in a firearm?
  • A. No, this is an Amnesty program, and no questions are asked of the person dropping off the firearm.
