Two Unions Begin Hudson Valley Apprentice Recruitment Drives
In all, 30 apprentice positions are available.
HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Two local unions are starting recruitment drives for apprentices — the Finishing Trades Institute of New York and the Sheet Metal Workers.
The Sheet Metal Workers will conduct a recruitment from March 1 through Dec. 30, seeking 20 Sheet Metal Worker apprentices.
The Finishing Trades Institute is looking for five glazier apprentices and five painter, decorator and paperhanger apprentices. Its recruitment drive runs from March 4 to Feb. 25, 2022.

For the Sheet Metal Workers, applications can be picked up at the Local Union #38 Craft Training Fund, 38 Starr Ridge Road, Brewster, NY, from 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.
The sheet metal workers recruitment committee requires that applicants:

- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED) as recognized by official school authorities.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license. Apprentices may be required to operate company vehicles.
- Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.
- Must be willing and able to travel within the jurisdiction of Local Union #38, which includes: the counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester in New York; and the counties of Fairfield and Litchfield in Connecticut.
- Must submit to drug testing, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
- Must take a Math Test administered by Local Union #38. The trade requires an extensive amount of math and work with rulers.
- Must provide Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.

The areas from which the Finishing Trades union is recruiting include the Hudson Valley, Capital District, Mohawk Valley and North Country.
Applications can be obtained at the Finishing Trades Institute of New York at 21 Airport Drive, Wappingers Falls, NY from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. every Thursday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.
The Committee requires that applicants:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
- Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.
- For the Glazier apprenticeship, must possess a valid driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
