Ambulance Transporting Man After Crash In 2nd Collision: Police

PECONIC, NY — An ambulance bringing a highway department worker who'd been in a crash was involved in a second collision Thursday, police said.

According to Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley, the Southold Fire Department ambulance transporting the driver of a town highway department dump truck to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital after a crash on County Road 48 and Peconic Lane was then involved in the second collision on Route 48 and Youngs Avenue in Southold.

No one in the ambulance was injured; the driver of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries and was then transported to ELIH by Cutchogue Fire Department Ambulance, Flatley said.

A woman was airlifted after the first crash with a dump truck in Peconic Thursday, police said.

According to Southold town police, the first crash took place at 11:20 a.m. on County Road 48 and Peconic Lane. A red 2017 Ford dump truck, being operated by a Southold town highway department worker, was heading north on Peconic Lane and through a steady green light when the driver of a gray 2017 Ford sedan ran through a steady red light at the intersection while heading east on County Route 48, police said.

No charges were filed in the crash, a police report.
