GREENPORT, NY — A new bistro has opened in Greenport that brings the essence and magic of Paris to the village.

Demarchelier Bistro, a family-owned incarnation of the iconic upper East Side classic, opened recently in Greenport on Main Street, bringing an array of tastes and culinary offerings straight out of a Parisian cafe.

Unlike the New York City restaurant that closed its doors after 40 years in business, the Greenport location has a focus on "casual and extremely cozy," owner Emily Demarchelier said.

The bistro, located at 471 Main Street, features touches that celebrate the flavors of France, including marble topped tables and an antique bar top brought over from the former location, as well as outdoor seating and paintings by the owner’s father, artist Eric Demarchelier.

“Greenport is very much a village where people are walking around and shopping and stopping at several different places, so I wanted to kind of attract that crowd of people that don’t necessarily want to sit for a whole meal, that wants to have a little bite to eat, taste a few things, have a few glasses of wine, and then go onto the next place," Emily Demarchelier said.

Conjuring the atmosphere of a romantic café in France, the bistro offers small plates including artichoke hearts with warm goat cheese, grilled octopus with chickpeas, and cheese fondue. Specialty dishes include roasted salmon with mixed vegetables, steak tartare with pomme dauphine, duck confit with spinach — and desserts including chocolate fondant or crème brulée.

The menu, created by Executive Chef Michel Pombet, is paired with a wide range of predominantly French wines. Demarchelier has partnered with North Fork’s Macari Vineyards to exclusively carry their offerings. The libations menu also includes cocktails such as La Provence Martini and a grapefruit rosemary mule, aperitifs, a cider of Normandy, beers, champagne, and dessert wine.

With travel abroad impossible due to the pandemic right now, diners are finding a piece of Paris close to home, Emily Demarchelier said. She has overhead the words: “Wow this is incredible. It was like I just traveled to France!” she said.

The bistro joins Demarchelier Restaurant, located at the Menhaden Hotel at 207 Front Street.

Helmed by siblings Emily and Benjamin Demarchelier, the restaurant is a "family affair that builds on the legacy of the Demarchelier family’s eatery in New York," both said.

Demarchelier Restaurant's menu offerings include traditional French fare such as steak tartare, duck a l’orange and moules mariniere. The menu is paired with a wide selection of predominantly French wines.
