Downed Trees, Flooded Roads As Heavy Winds, Rain Slam Area: Supervisor

BREAKING: The town has seen four downed trees in an hour as heavy winds pummel the North Fork, Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell said.

NORTH FORK, NY — As Tuesday's heavy winds and rain batter the North Fork, Southold Town has seen a number of downed trees and flooded roads.

"We're starting to see a lot of trees coming down, four in the last hour," Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell said. "One large limb is partially blocking Route 25 in Southold. Some are taking wires with them so now we are having power outages and road flooding."

And, with high tide approaching, he said, "I expect some roads will soon be impassable."

At Goldsmith Inlet, pictured above, the channel closes each winter and the dredging issue has sparked a sea of concern from local residents.

Southold Town Highway Superintendent Vincent Orlando said flooding was a chief concern, with the snow making it difficult for water to get to the edge of drains.

He added that there's a tree down on Depot Lane in Cutchogue and one on Parkway in Southold.

Areas of Greenport are also flooded.
