1 Home Destroyed, Another Gutted In Greenport Fire: Officials

Smoke from the Greenport fire could be seen for miles. Fire officials say the fire wiped out one home and gutted another, both were empty.

GREENPORT, NY —Firefighters tackled a blaze involving two homes and an RV that broke out in Greenport Friday morning.

According to the Greenport Fire Department, the structure fire broke out just after 8 a.m. near Webb and Third Streets.

Southold Town Police said a report came in about thick, black smoke coming from the area of Webb Street; firefighters found an abandoned residence at 324 Johnson Court to be fully engulfed in flames, police said. The fire spread to an abandoned residence at 320 Johnson Court as well as an abandoned camper on the property, police said.

Greenport Assistant Chief Jim Kalin said the blaze swept through the two older homes and RV, gutting one and "leveling" another; the two homes were "unused" and standing vacant for some time, with no one believed to have been inside.

No one was injured in the fire, he said.

Officials at the scene said the billowing smoke was heavy and seen for miles.

Greenport, East Marion, and Cutchogue Fire Departments responded and extinguished the fire; the Southold Fire Department was notified and placed on standby, police said.

Detectives from the Southold Police Department and Suffolk County Police Department Arson Division were notified and responded.

Suffolk County Arson is investigating the fire to determine the cause, Kalin said.
