GREENPORT, NY — The absentee votes have been tallied and the 2020-2021 Greenport Union Free School District's budget vote passed in a resounding show of support from the community.
According to the unofficial results, the budget passed by a wide margin of 552 to 242.
Board of Education member Kristin Droskoski, who was running unopposed, received 490 votes for a new three-year term.

According to a mailer from the district, the $20.1 million budget reflects a 2.5 percent tax levy that does not pierce the state cap, as well as a 3.47 percent change in expenditures.
Greenport School Superintendent David Gamberg, who is also the Southold School Superintendent, announced his retirement this year; the search for two separate new superintendents has been ongoing. Marlon Small has been chosen as the new superintendent in Greenport and Anthony Mauro, a former administrator in the Sachem School District, has gotten the nod as the new Southold superintendent.

Three shared administrative positions with Southold, the district said, will mean $110,000 in savings.
"We are so thankful for the support the Greenport community has always given to the school," said PTO President Kim Swann. "The business office and administration worked hard to present a responsible budget that keeps the increase under the tax cap. As we enter next year with so much uncertainty around us, the continued support of the community is more important than ever."
