Man Charged With Drunken Driving With 2 Kids In Minivan: Police

He was driving while intoxicated, speeding and swerving with two children under the age of 16 in his van, police say.

SOUTHOLD, NY — A Bronx man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated with two children in his vehicle on the North Fork, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place Saturday at 4:08 p.m. on Route 48 in Southold when Joseph Verley, 40, also of Greenport, was driving a 2014 Chrysler minivan east and was pulled over for speeding and swerving over the fog line into the shoulder of the roadway.

The vehicle was occupied by an adult male passenger and two children under 16, police said.

Verley was found to be intoxicated, arrested and transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital where he consented to a chemical blood test, police said. He was charged with two counts of aggravated DWI with child, first offense; acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17; DWI, first offense; speeding; moving from lane unsafely; and drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle on a highway, police said.

Verley was then transported to Southold police headquarters for processing and held for arraignment, police said.
