Man Charged In Hit-And-Run That Killed Elderly Woman, 87: Police

A man has been charged in the hit-and-run that killed an elderly woman who'd reportedly traveled the world and loved nature, police say.

GREENPORT, NY — Police have arrested the man they said fled the scene after a hit-and-run crash that took the life of a Greenport woman, 87, Monday morning.

According to Southold police, the crash took place at the intersection of Front and Third Streets at 7:17 a.m.; Elaine Schwartz died at the scene.

Denilson Eduardo Gomez-Jolon, 20, of Greenport, was arrested Monday night when, shortly after 7 p.m., a Southold police officer spotted the vehicle involved in the incident on Route 25 as it entered Greenport Village, police said.

A traffic stop was initiated and based on the investigation, Gomez-Jolon, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and obstructed view, police said. He will be arraigned in Southold Justice Court, police said.

Schwartz was crossing at the intersection when she was struck by Gomez-Jolon's vehicle as he was making a right turn onto Front Street from Third Street, police said.

After striking Schwartz, Gomez-Jolon fled the scene and headed westbound on Front Street,

Schwartz was transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, police said.

According to an article in the Northforker.com in 2018, Schwartz is remembered as a vibrant woman who had traveled to 81 countries since retiring and loved being out on the water in a canoe or kayak.
