Mattituck-Cutchogue Seniors Make Hometown Proud

MATTITUCK, NY — During an unprecedented time, two seniors have continued to shine in the Mattituck-Cutchogue Union Free School District, making their hometown proud.

During their Oct. 13 meeting, the Mattituck-Cutchogue Board of Education, as well as the administration, recognized the outstanding academic achievements of two members of the Class of 2021, the district said.

Seniors Luke Altman and Jillian Tuthill were honored as Commended Students in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. Letters of commendation from the high school and the National Merit Corporation were presented to both by High School Principal Shawn Petretti.

“We applaud both Luke and Jillian for their dedication, and commitment to achieving excellence,” stated Superintendent of Schools Jill Gierasch. “They exemplify the goals we aspire to achieve in our school district. We look forward to hearing more about their accomplishments in the future.”

More than 1.5 million students entered the 2021 competition by taking the 2019 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test; approximately 34,000 Commended Students nationwide are recognized for "exceptional academic promise," the district said.

Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers in the nation.
