'My House Shook': Social Media Abuzz After Loud Thunder Blast

Did Tuesday night's thunder wake you up?

NORTH FORK, NY — "My house shook." "North Korea has struck Mattituck." "A thunder explosion."

Social media was abuzz Wedneday morning about a loud clap of thunder that rocked the North Fork following a bright flash of lightning around 1:30 a.m.

The loud rumbling had some checking to see if their homes had been struck and others diving under their blankets — or beds — for cover.

"There were some thunderstorms last night. The louder the thunder is, the closer it is to you. It can shake the house sometimes," said Faye Morrone, meteorologist with the National Weather Service's office in Upton.

Morrone said there were a few rounds of rain Tuesday night. "We had a little bit of instability in the atmosphere — that's what you need to get thunderstorms."

Morrone said, however, while showers are expected to continue Wednesday across the North and South Forks, there are no thunderstorms predicted in the forecast.
