Police Recover Body Of Boater Missing In Long Island Sound

After a 9-foot rowboat overturned in the Long Island Sound Friday night, one person swam to shore and another man drowned, police say.

GREENPORT, NY — Police recovered the body of a boater missing in the Long Island Sound after a 9-foot rowboat with two aboard overturned Friday night.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place at 7 p.m. off Route 48 in the area of the Cliffside Resort Condominiums.

One person swam to shore and the other was initially unaccounted for, police said. Then, on Saturday at 5:30 a.m., Southold police recovered the body of Jose Martinez-Amaya, 28, of Queens, from the Long Island Sound in the area of the overturned boat, police said.

Suffolk County Medical Examiners transported Martinez-Amaya to their office for examination, police said.

The person who swam to shore was treated for hypothermia by Greenport Fire Department and transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital, police said.

Greenport Fire Department, Suffolk County aviation, and the United States Coast Guard responded to assist police in the search, police said.
