By Danny McCarthy
Schuyler W. Horton was born in Greenport on October 16, 1885 in Greenport and attended Greenport High School.
The November 2, 1962 The Herald Tribune carried the obituary for Schuyler W. Horton. “{He}attended Syracuse University and graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music.” He “owned the S. B. Furniture Co. and the Horton Funeral Home in Greenport.”
His years in the Senate included being “chairman of the Joint Legislative Committee on Fire Laws.” As a matter of fact, he ended up receiving a stupendous gift: “a testimonial scroll from the New York State Volunteer Firemen’s Association for his work in {re-writing} the fire laws.”
Mr. Horton was “also a member of the Joint Legislative Committee on Problems of the Aged .” He was a member of the “Committee on Taxation, Civil Service Pensions, Conservation, Finance, Highways and Parkways, Internal Affairs, and Public Education.”
There’s Much More to His Credit
Also according to that The Herald Tribune obituary, we get reminded that Mr. Horton “was a member of the National Republican Club, the National Tax Association, {and} the Metropolitan and National Funeral Directors Association. He was a trustee of the Greenport Presbyterian Church, {a} former member of the executive board of the Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, a former director or the First National Bank of Greenport, {and} he was honorary vice-president of the Association of Towns of the State of New York.”
The September 4, 1975 The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman carried the Greenport column by Marilyn Corwin who proudly shared that the Greenport Band “performed at dedication ceremonies of the Schuyler Wentworth Horton Park and had a total of 69 musicians affiliated with the all volunteer group.”
Now Get This!
Yet again being appreciative of the Mattituck-Laurel Library carrying Suffolk Times Obituaries online from 1900-2003, I heard from reference desk worker John with the obituary of Schuyler Wentworth Horton. In that particular item, it carries the statement that Mr. Horton “was a direct descendant of {1640 Southold Founder} Barnabas Horton.” We also get reminded that Mr. Horton was “a {life-long} Republican{, and that in} 1933 he was elected Supervisor of Southold Town and continued to serve in that capacity as a member of the Suffolk County Board of Supervisors,} {where he served} as chairman of the Board.”
Schuyler W. {Wentworth} Horton was with the {New York State} Senate from 1946 to 1956, according to that October 7, 1960 Suffolk Times Obituary!
Mr. Horton was known as “Skip,” and he “was an enthusiastic yachtsman.” I was also amazed to learn from that Suffolk Times Obituary that Mr. Horton “organized the Preston and Horton Marine Construction Company” along with Ralph T. Preston. That obituary also clarifies that Mr. Horton was “owner of the S. B. Furniture, Funeral and Monument business.” And we also get reminded that that business was “founded by his grandfather in 1862.”
“Skip” {if I may say-so} Wentworth Horton died on October 2, 1960.

Senator S. Wentworth Horton Park is located on the north side of Main Road at 72250 Main Road in Greenport , just a few miles west of Greenport Village. The runoff ponds at this Greenport park, which is east of the North Fork Promotion Council’s Information Center, provide a unique breeding ground for dragonflies.
