Say It Ain't So: "Hamptons" Makes Unfriendliest Cities List

Condé Nast's annual poll of readers finds Hamptons so unfriendly it suggests visiting in the winter

The Hamptons made Condé Nast’s annual list of most unfriendly cities in the United States. It came eighth on the list, just beneath Los Angeles and above Wilmington, Delaware. The friendliest city in the U.S. was Charleston, South Carolina.

Not surprisingly, Southern destinations scored tops for hospitality and medium-sized cities scored lowest.

According to the poll the “consensus” among survey respondents seemed to be that the “Hamptons,” is “incredible if you know someone, challenging if you don’t.”

Want to guess what advice Condé Nast offers travelers to the Hamptons? They suggest visiting in the winter “to get to know the natural environment and local artist communities, rather than the upscale summer crowd,” and their destination of note? The South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center.

The Hamptons can be a handful in the summer, but to neglect to suggest one of the beaches on the East End as a leading tourist attraction—even in the winter—seems remiss, especially considering they regularly make the top ten lists of beaches in the country.
