Southold Insurance Agent Bilked Customers Out of More Than $8,000: Police

Brian P. Okane was charged with scheme to defraud, a felony, police said.

A Southold insurance agent was busted yesterday for allegedly bilking his clients out of more than $8,000 over a two year period, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, Brian P. Okane, 50, of Saint James, was arrested on Thursday at 9 a.m. and charged with scheme to defraud, a felony.

The Southold Town Police Detective Squad, along with members of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Department of Financial Services Insurance Frauds Bureau concluded a lengthy investigation into a broad pattern of insurance fraud, culminating in Okane’s arrest, police said.

It was determined by investigators that Okane sold various insurance coverage policies from his Southold office to at least six victims, defrauding them of more than $8,000 dollars during a span from 2013 to 2015, police said.

Okane was arraigned in Southold Town Justice Court and released on his own recognizance to appear at a later date, police said.
