EAST NORTHPORT, NY — An East Northport woman has joined fellow Long Islanders in giving back to those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

Colette Corbett says she recently set up a Sharing Table in front of her home. The table has food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, toys and books for anyone in the community to take what they need.Donations are provided by the community.

Corbett opened her table on Monday morning after she became aware of Sharing Tables of NY, an idea with the motto "Take what you need, and leave what you can, if you can," founded by Mary Kate Tischler.

Corbett's table is at 2 Diane Court, East Northport.

"As soon as I heard about the Sharing Tables of NY I knew that I needed to get involved," Corbett told Patch. "My family is committed to finding ways to help our communities especially since we lost my 14-year-old nephew in 2019 to Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) - Tyler James Abizeid Foundation."

She said the support she has received from the community is heartwarming, as she went from one table with four bins of essentials to 3 full-length tables. Her table is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and weather permitting. Everything is kept anonymous, and no one stands behind the table. Corbett plans to keep her table open as long as the demand is there.

"During these overwhelming times, I want my children to understand that giving back and helping those in need is one of our core values in life," she said. "Even if hosting the table helps provide some relief to one family, that is a huge success to me."
