Flash Flood Watch Extended as Long Island Gets Soaked

Wild video of Sagtikos Parkway flooding shows strength of today's storms, which have knocked out power to thousands of Long Islanders.

After a long dry spell, Long Island needed some rain and Mother Nature complied on Thursday, probably too well.

Strong downpours flooded roads and knocked out power to thousands. Western Suffolk County seemed to bear the brunt of the storms, with the Sagtikos Parkway shutting down (it has since re-opened) and drivers in East Northport navigating through swamped roadways (see videos below).

Nearly 4,000 Long Islanders are without power as of 4:47 p.m, according to the PSEG Long Island outage map. The Town of Oyster Bay is home to nearly half of those outages.

Flash flood warnings have now expired, but all of Long Island remains under a flash flood watch until 6 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Additional heavy rain is likely overnight that could result in flash flooding.

Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation, the NWS says. Residents should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
