'High-Risk' Winter Sports Tryouts Begins At Northport High School
Tryouts for boys and girls basketball, competitive cheerleading and wrestling have arrived.

NORTHPORT, NY — Tryouts for "high-risk" winter sports have begun at Northport High School, according to a news release from the district.
Students are attempting to make squads in boys and girls basketball, competitive cheerleading and wrestling. As the district implements various safety measures put in place by Section XI due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the students are adapting and showing their excitement for a "slice of normalcy," according to the district.
Students began their tryouts in the school's gyms on Feb. 3. Coaches reviewed the new protocols and checked off the necessary documentation for students to participate before beginning warmups.

Despite the heightened safety precautions, student-athletes appeared thrilled to participate in sports again, the district wrote.
"It’s awesome to have our student-athletes back to playing," said Mark Dantuono, the district's director of health, physical education and athletics. "Their dedication to their respective sports and willingness to persevere through the various precautions is so impressive. It’s a true representation of school spirit."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo in January gave the state the green light to allow students to return to competing in what was called "high-risk sports." Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced guidance was issued that would allow for school districts to return to competition.
Students and coaches will be required to take weekly coronavirus tests, get their temperature taken before practices and games, attest that they do not have any symptoms of COVID-19, and maintain attendance logs. Sports were also encouraged to be played and practice outdoors where possible, with masks being worn when possible — especially on the sidelines. Other measures include social distancing among sidelined athletes, handwashing or sanitation before and after practice or games, and minimal equipment sharing.
