LI Native Denounces Lawmaker's 'Insanity' Over School Shooting

A Northport native whose daughter was killed in the Parkland school shooting criticized a video of Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

NORTHPORT, NY — Northport native Fred Guttenberg has been an outspoken advocate for gun reform after his 14-year-old daughter was killed in 2018 in a school shooting in Parkland, Florida. He said he has made the issue his life's mission; in 2020, he was thrown out of the State of the Union address after shouting at President Donald Trump about gun violence victims.

Now Guttenberg, who relocated to Florida, made national headlines again Wednesday after reposting a video of Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene harassing Parkland school shooting survivor David Hogg in 2019.

Guttenberg posted the video to Rep. Greene's Twitter account.

“Is this you harassing @davidhogg111 weeks after the Parkland shooting, that my daughter was killed in and he was in?" Guttenberg wrote. "Calling him a coward for ignoring your insanity. I will answer all of your questions in person. Get ready to record again."

The video was recorded in March 2019 and Greene posted it to her YouTube channel.

Greene can be seen following Hogg, telling him that Nikolas Cruz "wouldn't have killed anybody in your high school" if a security director had done a better job. She asked Hogg why he is "using kids as a barrier," seemingly a reference to Hogg being part of student-led gun reform activism in the aftermath of the shooting. Hogg ignored Greene and continued walking, spurring Greene to call him a coward.

Seventeen people were killed and 17 more were injured in the shooting February 14, 2018, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Greene said in a statement to CNN that she was opposing "the radical gun control agenda that David Hogg was pushing."

She added, "I will always work to protect our gun rights so that Americans can defend themselves and others against bad people intent to harm or kill them."

Greene, a Republican, has been criticized by politicians on both sides of the aisle for supporting violent statements against lawmakers. CNN reported Greene liked comments on social media saying "a bullet to the head would be quicker" than removing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and "through removal or death, doesn't matter, as long as she goes."

Greene has also expressed support for conspiracy theories claiming school shootings in Parkland and Newtown, Connecticut, were staged.

Guttenberg told CNN he will continue to "shine sunlight" on Greene.

"She and I are going to meet in person, and I will make sure it is recorded because I don't want there to be any question over what was said, how it was said and facts," he said. "There won't be any questions as to facts. And I'm going to bring proof of what happened to my daughter."
