LI Native And Gun Law Activist Escorted Out Of State Of The Union

Fred Guttenberg became an advocate for gun law reform after his daughter was killed in the Parkland, Florida school shooting.

Northport, NY — Fred Guttenberg became a nationally-known advocate for gun law reform after his daughter's 2018 murder in a mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida and again made headlines Tuesday night during the State of the Union address. After shouting to protest President Trump's stance on opposing stricter gun laws, he was removed from the room by Capitol Police. Guttenberg was invited to the State of the Union by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Guttenberg grew up in East Northport and attended Commack North High School. His daughter Jaime was 14 years old when she was gunned down in the Parkland tragedy. Guttenberg has since become a vocal activist for gun law reform and founded a charity in her honor called Orange Ribbons for Jaime.

After the incident, Guttenberg issued an apology on Twitter stating: "Tonight was a rough night. I disrupted the State Of The Union and was detained because I let my emotions get the best of me. I simply want to be able to deal with the reality of gun violence and not have to listen to the lies about the 2A as happened tonight.

That said, I should not have yelled out. I am thankful for the overwhelming support that I am receiving. However, I do owe my family and friends an apology. I have tried to conduct myself with dignity throughout this process and I will do better as I pursue gun safety."
