NORTHPORT, NY — Munchkin, a 3-to-4-year-old female with black fur and green eyes, was named the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Cat of the Week.

"Munchkin was abandoned when her family had a new baby and decided that she should no longer live in the only home she ever knew," Lora Wild, a volunteer at the rescue told Patch. "One of the neighbors saw poor Munchkin suddenly trying to make it on her own, in the cold elements. He watched as Munchkin looked desperate, not understanding why her family would not allow her back in as she meowed at their door. Luckily, he called NCRA and she is now safe in a loving foster home."

Munchkin is super vocal, according to Wild.

"When you walk into a room, she will welcome you with a meow, as if she is asking you to pet her," Wild said. "Once you start petting her, she will purr loudly but is still overly cautious."

Munchkin's favorite toy is a silver and red crinkle ball, and she loves to rub her face all over it.

"She is trying so hard to let her guard down, and we believe with time and patience, this playful and sweet girl will come to completely relax and enjoy the safety of finally finding a forever home," Wild said.

Munchkin's foster family is working to rebuild her trust, as she is still unsure who to feel safe around, according to Wild. The rescue would like to see Munchkin adopted by a cat-savvy owner with no young children.

"She is also scared of other cats, due to her recent abandonment into the rough outdoors, so it would be best for her to be an only kitty," Wild said. "We know there is someone special out there for her, that can relate to her fears and want to help her."

Munchkin is spayed, has all her shots, is litter box-trained, micro-chipped and FELV/FIV negative.

To meet Munchkin, or any of the association's other kittens and cats, head to its Northport Cat Rescue website and fill out an application to let them know you'd like to meet her or any other cats. You can also fax an application to 631-651-5597 or call NCRA at 631-606-2631.
