Northport PD Blotter: Man Runs From Officer During Traffic Stop
The man was pulled over when he used a cell phone while driving, and the officer found marijuana in his car, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from March 1 through March 7.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- Christian Martinez, 19, of East Northport, was driving when he was stopped on Fort Salonga Road around 1:30 p.m. March 7 for using a cell phone, police said. The officer smelled marijuana coming from Martinez's vehicle and saw some vape-type cartridges on the passenger seat, police said. The officer made multiple requests for Martinez to keep his hands visible and stop reaching inside the car and then tried to place him in handcuffs, police said. Martinez then ran away from the officer, leading to a foot chase until the officer was able to place Martinez into custody, police said. The officer found multiple concentrated cannabis oil cartridges and several ounces of marijuana in Martinez's car, police said. Martinez was arrested and charged with use of mobile telephones, resisting arrest, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Incidents
- Police on March 1 received a call for a vehicle parked in a church lot on Main Street. The officer recognized the vehicle as one that is parked in the lot overnight often. The caller asked police to relay the message to the car owner that he should move his vehicle in the morning so churchgoers could use the space. Police told the caller that the car owner lives nearby and they would try to reach him. The owner could not be contacted. The caller was advised the vehicle was parked on private property and was advised of his options to deal with the vehicle.
- A woman on March 1 reported an identity theft attempt as someone tried to gain unemployment benefits from using her name. New York state had already caught the attempt.
- A silver ring with a purple stone was found and turned into police headquarters on March 1.
- A man on March 2 reported a fraudulent unemployment claim was filed in his name. Roughly two weeks ago, he received an unemployment benefits debit card in the mail despite never filing for it. The man has not sustained any financial loss at the time, and that he had contacted his banks, credit cards and the major credit bureaus to watch for unauthorized activity. Police suggested the man return if any unauthorized activity occurs.
- A woman overdosed on Fort Salonga Road on March 3. Police found her unconscious and not breathing. She was administered three doses of Narcan; one nasal and two by injection. She eventually regained consciousness and was brought to Huntington Hospital by East Northport Rescue.
- A man was reportedly soliciting on Main Street around 7:30 p.m. March 3. The man told police he is a private contractor employed by Optimum Altice to go door-to-door trying to sell their product. The man was told there is no soliciting allowed in the village without a permit. He agreed to leave.
- A man was reportedly soliciting on Oak Street around 6:30 p.m. March 4. The man told police he is a private contractor employed by Optimum Altice to go door-to-door trying to sell their product. The man was told there is no soliciting allowed in the village without a permit. He agreed to leave.
- Police responded to Edgaret Place on March 5 for a report of someone who consistently blocks the road when a man attempts to drive. The man said he has had conversations with the person in the past and doesn't want to talk to them anymore. The man was told to avoid the person and call police if they block the road or enters his property.
- A man on March 5 reported he received notice he applied for NYS unemployment benefits, even though he did not apply. He did not sustain any financial loss.
- A woman on March 6 reported that someone was trying to claim unemployment under her name. She said she received paperwork in January 2021 indicating she applied for unemployment when she had not.
