Northport PD Blotter: Police Called On Persistent Solicitor

The solicitor did not have a permit, and he would not leave a woman's home after she told him she was not interested, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Jan. 18 through Jan. 24.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • A sick raccoon was reported on Belknap Drive on Jan. 19. The raccoon was showing clear signs of distemper, and an officer euthanized it.
  • A bird got trapped between a window and window screen on Goldenrod Avenue. An officer freed the bird without injuring it or damaging the window. The incident happened Jan. 20.
  • An erratic driver who ran a stop sign and passed other drivers was reported on Ocean Avenue on Jan. 20. Police could not find the driver.
  • A pizzeria owner went to police headquarters on Jan. 20 to report suspicious activity that occurred in her business over the previous three days. She said a man would visit the store for food, and during those visits, he would talk to himself and seem agitated. On Jan. 19, the owner said the man, as he was leaving, said, everyone "should pray tonight." The owner wanted the incident filed for informational purposes.
  • A woman was hit by a man riding a bicycle on Main Street at 3:53 on Jan. 22. An officer found the woman on the ground with a left shoulder injury. She said the bicyclist collided with her while she was crossing the street. The cyclist told police that as he was riding his bike down the street, the woman walked onto the road from between parked vehicles and that he tried avoiding the collision. The woman was brought to Huntington Hospital by Northport Rescue.
  • Police responded to North Road for a report of a man knocking on someone's door on Jan. 23. An officer spoke with the man, who works for Neilson Ratings, police said. The man said the woman who called the police was randomly selected to take part in the Neilson Ratings and was trying to talk with her. The woman said the man knocked on her door, would not go away, and continued to try to get her to open the door to talk even after she told him she was not interested and wanted him to leave. The officer told the man he could no longer try to contact the woman, and that if he wanted to solicit in the village, he would need to get a permit.
  • A group of youths was skateboarding on the gazebo at Village Park on Jan. 24. Police told them to stay off the gazebo, which they did.
