Northport Police Blotter: Drunken Driver Caught Speeding

The man crossed over the double-yellow line several times and refused to take a breath test, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from March 29 through April 4.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Daniel Donovan, 44, of Centerport, was speeding while driving a 2018 Chevrolet on Scudder Avenue around 9 p.m. April 2, police said. He swerved across the double-yellow line several times while traveling east, police said. Donovan was stopped, and an officer smelled alcohol coming from his breath, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slurred and sluggish, he was very unsteady on his feet, and he performed poorly on several field sobriety tests, police said. He was arrested and brought to the Northport Village Police Department, where he refused to take a chemical breath test, police said. Donovan was charged with unsafe lane change, refuse pre-screen test, driving while intoxicated and unreasonable speed.

Incidents

  • A woman on March 29 told police her Jefferson Avenue neighbor posted a sign in front of her property stating that no parking was allowed. Police told the neighbor she could not post "no parking" signs around the block, and the sign needed to be removed.
  • A summons was issued to the driver of a vehicle that was parked in a "no parking anytime" zone on Main Street on March 29.
  • A reckless driver was warned and admonished near Municipal Lot #1 of Constitution Square on March 29.
  • A woman on March 29 reported a Progressive Insurance policy opened in her name for her vehicle. She said she never opened a policy with the company and is trying to have it closed.
  • A woman on March 29 reported her employer received a New York state unemployment benefits claim she never applied for. At the time of her report, she has not suffered financial loss.
  • A group of kids on bicycles was warned and admonished by police for being rude and reckless on March 29.
  • A man on March 29 reported a case of a false unemployment benefits claim as well as
    a false Geico auto insurance policy filed under his name. He said that over the last few weeks, he received letters at home stating that he is qualified for unemployment benefits as well as a bill for a Geico policy for which he never applied. The man has not suffered any financial loss, nor has he had any unauthorized accounts opened in his name.
  • A small fire broke out on the back deck of a Seaview Terrace home on March 30. A resident said she was burning some old mail in a pot and some embers fell onto the deck, starting the fire. The fire was doused by the Northport Fire Department. No one was injured, and the house was not damaged.
  • A man on March 30 said a false unemployment benefit was made in his name. The man has not suffered any financial loss, nor has he had any unauthorized accounts opened in his name.
  • A dog got loose on Terry Road on March 30. Police could not find the dog.
  • A Woodhull Place resident on March 31 reported a man she didn't know was seen walking from the back of her property and headed towards the front of her driveway via the Ring app she had on her phone. Her property was not damaged or stolen from, she said. Police watched footage of the man, who was wearing construction or utility worker attire. Police could not find the man in the area. However, a PSEG truck was in the area, though police did not speak with the workers.
  • A man on April 1 said a false unemployment benefit was made in his name. The man has not suffered any financial loss, nor has he had any unauthorized accounts opened in his name.
  • A dead fox was found in the middle of Waterside Avenue on April 2. Northport Highway was called to remove it.
  • A man on April 2 said a false unemployment benefit was made in his name. The man has not suffered any financial loss, nor has he had any unauthorized accounts opened in his name.
  • A woman on April 2 reported that an unknown person listed her address as a home address for unemployment insurance. She did not suffer financial loss at the time of the report. The New York State Department of Labor was advised.
  • A teenage girl was in the bathroom for more than an hour at Britannia Yachting Center on April 2. Police checked on her, and she left the area after she said she didn't need any help.
  • A man complimented a younger female at Village Park on April 4. The man is known to the department, and police said he has an "altered mental status." The girl told police the man said she was pretty and "rambled things about God." The man was told to leave the area and not talk to the girl in the future. He agreed to do so.
  • A woman told police that a man was making her feel uncomfortable at Village Park and that she was sleeping on a boat overnight. The man said he was making conversation and agreed to not speak with her again. The incident was reported April 4.
